Why is it SO HARD to find a place to sit around here?
“Hostile” is one of many terms used to describe design elements in public spaces that aim to stop people from using the space. Someone might defend hostile design by saying they are attempting to keep an area “clean” or “drug and crime-free.” In reality, these tactics target houseless and poor people, discouraging them from staying in one particular place for “too long” and preventing the possibility of sitting, sleeping, or generally taking up space. Hostile design interventions target people who rely most on public space, and yet they diminish the experience of public life for all.
